Our Global Health Program (GHP) harnesses advances in science and technology to save lives in poor countries. We focus on the health problems that have a major impact in developing countries but get too little attention and funding. Where proven tools exist, we support sustainable ways to improve their delivery. Where they don’t, we invest in research and development of new interventions, such as vaccines, drugs, and diagnostics. Our work in infectious diseases focuses on strategies to fight and prevent HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, neglected tropical diseases, enteric and diarrheal diseases and pneumonia. These strategies are supported by functional teams that focus on Discovery and Translational Sciences, Vaccine Development, and Integrated Development.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

The Deputy Director, Strategy Planning and Management (DDSPM) will support two Global Health program strategy teams:

·Neglected Tropical Diseases and

·Pneumonia.

S/He will be responsible for leading the strategic, financial, and operational aspects of an integrated program area, bringing to bear senior business, investment, and management expertise on portfolio, initiative, and investment-level decision-making. The DDSPM will lead annual planning and reporting cycle processes, including framing and analysis on issues and investments central to strategy and execution, ongoing pipeline and portfolio management, business analysis and the coordination of business strategies across the Foundation. The DDSPM will also manage a team of business and operations professionals.

Specifically, the DDSPM will be responsible for the following:

Strategy Development, Management and Leadership:

Serve as a strategicpartnerandthoughtpartnerwithDirector and programstaff to provide ongoing strategy development, process monitoring, and evaluation of function and core processes.
Core teammember and criticaladvisor in making data-driven investmentdecisions(providecomplementarystrategic and investmentacumen to thescientific/technicalexpertiseof the Program Officers).
Lead or co-lead complexstrategic projects that are often cross-functional in nature.

Strategy Execution and Operations

Develop and execute portfolio and advisory support to program team(s) on development and management of major grants; including identifying success metrics for strategy,portfolio,andindividualgrants and developingprocesses/tools to ensure alignment ofactivitieswithstrategy success.
Developandmanagebudgetsandforecasts.PartnerwithFinance on thedevelopmentandmaintenanceofDivision's grant, DirectCharitableExpenses(DCE) and contracts pipeline.
Cultivate insights and story to communicate portfolio allocation and progress. Oversee overall Rhythm of the Business across the team. Accountable for strategy hierarchy and grantee partner engagement.
Drive alignment of team’s work to strategy and implementation plans. Design analytical model to define strategy metrics, progress metrics and setting of targets and goals. Continuously refine data, metrics and models.
Leadtheprocess,set the directionandmanagetheprocess for strategic planning; including articulation ofannualstrategicpriorities.
Partner withsupportfunctionsandprogram/functionalteammanagement to manage, recruit, developand train staffwho support theactivitiesneededto plan, execute and achieve the strategicplan.

Trusted Advisor to Director and Team

Act as “soundingboard” and thoughtpartnertoDirectors on broadsetoftopicsimpacting the overallmanagementof the Programs(e.g., HR andteamfulfillment,managementissues,addressingbroaderFoundationrequests,relationshipswith other Functions/Programs, alignment with leadership, etc).
Provide feedback and advisory support to program team on development and management of major grants.

Supporting & Managing High Performing Teams

Monitor and manage succession planning, team performance and development.
Support Director with workforce planning
Responsible to help promote culture and values and may design organization structure, facilitate retreats and cross-organization collaboration.
Cross-foundation Continuous Improvement
Support continuous improvement and change management initiatives including contribution to thedesignofprocesses,policies, and organization to improve efficiency andimpactofteam’s activities.
Represent Program teams in foundation-wide continuous improvement efforts, supporting design, execution and change management associated with evolving how we work in the organization.
